Local players shine in PH football and volleyball

LINGAYENPangasinan’s teams took top honors in the recently concluded first Beach Football Tournament of the Philippine Beach Games (PBG) held as an activity of Pista’y Dayat celebration.

Bolinao Warriors’ Club romped off with the championship, besting runner-up Pangasinan State University Football Club at the closing day of the two-day PBG on April 29.

Second runner-up was Pozorrubio United Football Association. Melanie Ramos and Joan Marie Fernandez duo of Team Lingayen II settled runner-up to Pam Legazpi and Toni Fay Tan of Team YSA.

The Viray twins of Lingayen, Marie Jeziela and Maria Neiza, who had their basic exposure in provincial government-sponsored volleyball tournaments, placed second runner-up.

The PBG winners that included teams from Manila-based universities and colleges were presented during the awarding ceremony held at the Capitol beachfront on April 29 led by Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Officer Malu Elduayn, representing Gov. Amado Espino III, and JP Demontano, PBG overall event director.

Demontano, in an interview, acknowledged the support of the provincial government in staging the first of PBG games.

“Napakaluwang ng landscape ng Capitol beachfront which is ideal for beach games tournament,” said Demontano.

Winners of other PBG events were:

* Flag Football – Team Purple Haze (champion), Baywatch (1st runner-up); and Team Bikini Bottom Football (2nd runner-up).

* Handball (Men’s division) – Metro Handball Club (champion), Baras Barakos (1st runner-up), and Antipolo Crusaders Handball Team (2nd runner-up).

* Handball (Women’s division) – Kunoichi Handball Club of Japan (champion), Metro Handball Club (1st runner-up) and St. Claire Saints (2nd runner-up).

Ultimate Frisbee (Pool A) – Tugs (champion), Klitch (1st runner-up) and Better (2nd runner-up);

Ultimate Frisbee (Pool B) – Jonats and Role Players (champion), Sentinels (1st runner-up) and Sea Lions (2nd runner-up).

Petanque – Petanque Club 1 (champion), Bohol Petanque Club 3 (1st runner-up) and PWWA PWWB (2nd runner-up). (PIO/MGNO
