INC stages Worldwide Walk on baywalk

MORE than 22,000 members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo joined the May 6 Worldwide Walk to Fight Poverty along the Lingayen to Binmaley Baywalk, one of the 358 event sites worldwide.

Brother Eugenio Cortez II, district supervising minister of the INC in Central Pangasinan, said the event at the Baywalk was successful through the “solidarity” of the church members who came from different towns.

The Worldwide Walk project, dubbed Kabayan ko, Kapatid ko, officially started at 6 a.m. of May 6 although participants started trooping to the designated area as early as midnight of May 5.

Dawn of May 6, the starting line in Barangay Baybay Lopez in Binmaley was already full of members, lining up and awaiting the go-signal for the 1,600-meter (1.6-kilometers) walk that ended at the back of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office.

Virgilio Limson, 86 years old, from Baluyot, Bautista, said that although he was one among the last that reached the finish line because of old age, he said he was happy to finish to “show unity with everyone” who joined the event launched by the INC to help the government raise awareness to fight poverty in the different communities of the nation.

Gian Lenard Aguilar, a seven-year-old member of the INC in Lingayen, said he was proud that he too finished the walk with his family.

The first Worldwide Walk was held on February 15, 2014 to help the Yolanda victims then. The INC helped members and non-members build a community with houses and eco-farm for the victims.

P/Chief Inspector Wilmer Pagaduan, deputy police chief of Lingayen, who assisted in securing the event, said it was “peaceful and no recorded untoward incident”.
