PSU Board fails to muster a quorum anew

STILL NO ACTION ON BUTED’S SUSPENSION

LINGAYEN—The board of regents of the Pangasinan State University (PSU) met on April 16 to decide on a new leader but reportedly again failed to muster a quorum.

Those present were Commission on Higher Education (CHEd)officer-in-charge Prospero de Vera, chairman; Congresswoman Ann Hofer, chair of the House Committee on Higher Education; three regional directors of line agencies who represented their respective heads offices, and PSU president Dexter Buted.

Questions have been raised whether there was indeed no quorum because it takes only five board members to constitute a quorum, unless the regional directors who represented their respective heads of office have no voting rights.

Having no quorum, the regents failed again to designate an officer-in-charge who will assume the duties of PSU president while Buted remains under suspension.

Fourth District Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario weighed in on the situation and said PSU president Buted already accepted his nine-month suspension imposed on him and Dr. Marcelo Gutierrez by the Office of the Ombudsman.

Rosario recalled that Buted bade goodbye to faculty members as well as students and their parents during the PSU Stakeholders’ Meeting last week, and quoted Buted when he said, “This is Dr. Dexter Buted, PSU president, temporarily signing off”.

He added that the Ombudsman informed the board of regents that its decision is “immediately executory”.

While the nine-month suspension of Buted exceeds beyond the end of his term in December this year, Rosario shared a report that Buted is seeking another term as PSU president. (Leonardo Micua)
