No world war expected – JDV

NO world war will erupt anytime soon despite the joint missile attack last week by the United States, Britain, and France on Russia-backed Syria over the Arab nation’s suspected use of chemical weapons against its citizens, according to former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., now President Rodrigo Duterte’s special envoy on multi-cultural dialogue.

In a talk to newsmen at his residence on April 16, De Venecia downplayed fears of any world war, saying the attack on Syria was a limited one and concentrated only on two areas of that country where alleged chemical weapons were being stockpiled.

“It is not enough to trigger a shooting war between the western countries and Russia, which is allied with Syria,” De Venecia said.

What De Venecia said is a more serious threat to world peace is the war between the Sunni and Shiite Muslims, which he said the newspapers are not writing about, but is in fact considered “grave and terrible that can explode at any time”.

He said if that happens, it could place in “serious danger” the 1.1 million Filipinos living and working in countries located on both sides of the Persian Gulf.

Identified with the Sunnis are Saudi Arabia, Jordan, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Iraq while the Shiites are with Iran, Syria, and Yemen.

Noting that these are “very dangerous times when diplomacy must prevail”, De Venecia said he is now silently working to bring together those warring factions in the conference table to thresh out their differences, adding that he had just come from Iran two weeks ago for this mission.

De Venecia is also the chairman of the Asian Conference of Political Parties.

If that attack will deteriorate into another world war, “the whole world is finished”.

He said the situation in the Korean Peninsula is also precarious but that he is “happy to see” South and North Korean leaders attempting to decrease the tension and with the expected meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. (Leonardo Micua)
