A security guard from Quezon City drowned on Maundy Thursday at 11:15 a.m. while swimming along with his girlfriend at the Tondaligan Beach in Sitio, Thailand in Bonuan Gueset.

The victim was identified as Deniel Cartagena, 32. of Doña Carmen, Quezon City. He and girlfriend Twity Candy Mateo, 24, of Bagong Silang, Caloocan City arrived at the beach to swim.

But a few minutes later, they were seen on the verge of drowning. By the time they were rescued by bystanders, Cartagena already appeared to be barely breathing.

Both victims were rushed to the Decena Hospital in Bonuan Gueset where Cartagena was declared dead on arrival. Mateo survived. (Leonardo Micua)
