BOLINAO—If you are looking for something worthwhile to adopt, visit the University of the Philippines-Marine Science Institute (UPMSI) Bolinao Marine Laboratory and say you want to adopt a baby giant… a baby giant clam!

The university launched on April 20 its Adopt-A-Clam project, an extension project of the UPMSI Bolinao Marine Laboratory (BML) that seeks to raise awareness on the conservation of giant clams and the marine environment.

However, at the moment, the privilege to adopt the limited baby clams is reserved initially to those who attended the launch of the BML grand exhibit.

But no, you can’t bring your adopted baby giant clam home.  As adoptive parent, your baby clam will be tagged with your name and will be placed in a special area in the ocean nursery.

The adoptive person will receive an adoption kit and certificate. Perhaps you can have a selfie beside your baby clam.

BML will care for adopted clams and regularly track their growth to adulthood.

Donations to the BML Adopt-A-Clam program will support the conservation effort of UPMSI and will help care for giant clams in the Philippines.

“It will help us care for giant clams at the Silaqui Ocean Nursery, the largest population of giant clams in the Philippines,” said UPMSI Facebook page.

It added, “Your donation will also allow us to produce more baby giants for stocking throughout the country.”

Donations will depend on the size or age of the clam, namely, 3-5 centimeters (cms ) or one-year-old clam is P200,  8-12 cms (2 years old) is P300 and 15-25 cm (4 years old) is P400!

The UPMSI BML said those who failed to attend the exhibit will have their chance to adopt soon as more baby clams are available. (Eva Visperas)
