21 arrested for playing mahjong, pusoy, dropball

CAMPAIGN VS. ILLEGAL GAMBLING

LINGAYEN—Police in five Pangasinan towns swooped down on illegal gambling activities and arrested 21 persons, including one minor, during simultaneous raids on April 9.

Arrested in the middle of a mahjong session in Barangay Libertad in Tayug town were Milky Lopez, 18; Rufina Apaqlla, 52; Ralph Lopez Muñoz, 20; Bryan Palasique, 22; Jerwin Sanchez, 52; and Jojolou Bautista, 52.

They were charged with violation of Republic Act 9287, or the Anti-Illegal Gambling Law.

With them was John Felipe, 15, who was later placed under the custody of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.

One player escaped arrest but was identified by his companions as Norberto Norberte Jr., alias “Onyok”.

Cash bets amounting to ₱810 were confiscated in the Tayug raid.

Also caught playing mahjong were seven individuals in a separate raid in Barangay Marinong, Sta. Barbara town., They were Godolfredo Tamayo, 38; Juan Mamenta, 60; Gregorio Mamenta, 59; Benjamin Flores, 71; Rommel Macatlang, 41; Jesus de Guzman, 53; and Rodrigo Macatlang, 57.

The police seized cash bets of ₱840 in bets in that raid

A third raid, in Barangay Tobuan, Labrador, led to the arrest of Pedro Mandapat, 63, of Barangay Pangascasan, Sual, who was caught operating a “drop ball” contraption. The Labrador police seized from him ₱400 bets.

Also arrested that day were Roderick Basanes, 34, and Ariel Aquino, 42, who were caught in the act of playing “cara y cruz” on Burgos-Padlan Street in San Carlos City. A total of ₱182 bets were seized from them.

Four other suspects, Virgilio Ramos, 37; Alejandro Junio, 58; Charlie Bautista, 49; and Victorino Agleron, 56, were arrested while playing pusoy at a tricycle terminal on M.H. del Pilar Street in Bayambang.
