PNP: Report on abduction of minors is fake news

THE Dagupan City police dismissed as fake news a report circulated in social media on the alleged abduction or kidnapping of minors in the city and in other towns and cities that unduly created alarm and panic among city residents, especially parents concerned about the safety of their children.

P/Supt. Jandale Sulit, city police chief, said the Women and Children Protection Desk of the Dagupan City Police Station (DCPS), that receives and acts on cases involving women and children, and cases involving gender-sensitive issues, never received any report of alleged abduction or kidnapping of women and minors in the city.

He added his police station has no pending or ongoing investigation relative to the alleged abduction and kidnapping described in the alert posted on Facebook that created panic particularly among parents.

Sulit suspected that the fake news stemmed from an earlier report of two missing persons riding a motorcycle along A.B. Fernandez East St. who were reportedly abducted by unidentified men riding a Starex van in the early morning of March 12.

The motorcycle was recovered by the police.

Sulit said the two reportedly abducted, whose identities are still unknown, are adults and not minors. He said the police are now conducting an investigation and have appealed to the relatives of the two missing persons to go to the police station and report and identify the supposed victims.

The WCPD, together with the entire police force, is continuously conducting monitoring, vigilance and alertness to preempt or deter crime of abduction or kidnapping and any other crimes in the city, Sulit said.

Meanwhile, the police are conducting a citywide symposium to heighten community awareness among students and teachers and distributed flyers on crime prevention tips and the hotline telephone number of the police that they can call in a bid to calm them and ease their minds.

Sulit called on the residents not to be quick to share unverified news in order to stop creating undue alarm. (Leonardo Micua)
