Know how to use fire extinguishers – Fire marshal

By March 4, 2018Inside News, News

BUILDING and house owners should be familiar with the use of fire extinguishers instead of merely complying with the law and ordinances.

This was the reminder issued by Arthur Sawate, provincial fire marshal of the Bureau of Fire Protection, who reported that fire incidents across Pangasinan last year decreased by 28%, from almost 700 in 2016 to more than 500 in 2017.

He told Bombo Radyo Dagupan in an interview that the usual causes of fire in structural buildings is defective or old faulty electrical wirings or overheating of appliances while grassfires are caused by burning garbage or thrown lighted cigarette butts.

He confirmed that there were already reported cases in January-February this year but pointed out that so far there have been no suspected arson cases since 2016.

He said the theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Month is “Ligtas na Pilipinas ang aking hangad, ang pag-iingat sa sunog ay sa sarili ipatupad” that emphasizes each one’s role and sense of responsibility in ensuring a fire-free environment.

He advised the public to have the numbers for emergency hotlines for prompt reporting of fire incident in their communities to help ensure prompt response by firemen.

‘Talagang late po kaming darating kung late ang reporting kasi hindi naman kami ang nauuna sa apoy,” he said. (Eva Visperas)
