Watch out for charming policewomen manning stations’ front desks

LINGAYEN–Smiling and well-groomed policewomen in Region 1 will now man the front desks of police stations to make people at ease in the presence of the police.

P/Chief Superintendent Romulo Sapitula, Region 1 police director, said those who are assigned have undergone proper training on how to deal with people coming to police stations seeking assistance.

He said the policewomen should possess “tamang bihis” (proper dress up), including wearing make- up and manicured nails.

He said traditionally, police stations have policemen assigned to the front desks. “Now, it has evolved. Why? Front desks of big companies, hotels, and others, have women,” he said.

He said he has experimented doing this in the Eastern Police District and it was successful and wants to introduce the program to Region 1.

He said he believes that people usually do not hesitate to approach women, a sharp contrast to men who turn away people with merely a frown.

The face of a police station is its desk officer, and “we want that people to feel comfortable when they see police officers,“ he said.

He said seminars conducted for the front desk officers include customer relations.

Because there are not enough policewomen who could man front desks, Sapitula said they would be assigned for day-time duty only.

Policemen who will be assigned at the front desks for night duty will also be made to undergo the same seminar.

Sapitula added he noticed that police stations are cleaner, including their logbooks, when women take care of them.

“When you say to dress up properly, her heart and her personality should also be clean,” he said.

Sapitula said this program is not gender-bias because policemen also take over at night.

He expects his project shall be fully implemented in entire Region 1 by the end of February. (Eva Visperas)
