LINGAYEN-The Lingayen Gulf Baywalk project, which was started here in 2012, is set to be duplicated in other coastal areas in Pangasinan and all the way to La Union.

This was revealed by Second District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil, who started the project in Maniboc, Lingayen and is being continued up to Binmaley due to clamor of residents.

He said Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia wants to extend it to Barangay Pugaro in Dagupan and extend up to the boundary of San Fabian with Sto. Tomas, La Union.

At the same time, La Union Second District Rep. Sandra Eriguel said she intends to adopt the project for the coastal area in her district.

Bataoil told the KBP Forum in Dagupan that the Lingayen Gulf Baywalk now stretches 13 kilometers.

It is as sturdy as an ordinary road built by the Department of Public Works and Highways because it uses the standard adopted in construction of national highways, he added.

He said the project was initially funded by his Priority Development Fund (PDAF) in 2012 when PDAF was not yet outlawed by the Supreme Court, and was continued using the Department of Tourism convergence fund.

The Lingayen Gulf Baywalk is, in fact, a tourism-oriented project, where people can stroll and jog early mornings and late afternoons till early evenings.

The portion of the baywalk behind the Provincial Capitol is lighted at night using solar-powered light donated to the provincial government by Team Energy in Sual.

The project, he said, in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Provincial Government, also checks presence of illegal structures in the beach.

Bataoil said that since it was built using the standard in the construction of national highways, the baywalk can be used by local government units as alternative road for light vehicles in case of emergency. (Leonardo Micua)
