WAR ON DRUGS TARGET

SAN JACINTO —The whole province could be declared drug-free by the regional oversight committee by 40 days or end of March this year.

This is the timeline being looked into by P/Sr. Superintendent Ronald Lee when he spoke to local media during the ceremony that declared San Jacinto as the 18th town in Pangasinan declared as drug-free by the committed headed by Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) last Tuesday, February 14.

Lee who was also in Bugallon the day before to witness the declaration of the town as drug-free by the oversight committee, said that at the rate the validation by PDEA is going, the whole of Pangasinan may be declared drug-free by March.

But he added that there can still be setbacks if towns previously declared drug-free are reported to have reverted back to their old status as drug-affected with proofs if there is proof that drug pushing as well as drug use had returned to these places and could not be contained by the police as well as the municipal and barangay officials.

He said if there is a reported resurgence of drugs in a previously declared drug-free municipality or city, the police in that place is given one month to conduct interdiction measure and if they fail, the town will be reverted to its status as drug- affected.

Lee cited the arrest of three persons by the police, PDEA and the Provincial Investigation Branch in Lucap, Alaminos City on Feb. 11at the start of the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) meet. He expressed hope that the operation stopped the possible resurgence of drugs in Alaminos which was already declared drug-free since last year.

The suspects were arrested in a drug buy-bust operation after they were reported to be starting to distribute drugs during the regional athletic meet. (Leonardo Micua)
