Congratulations, Balon Dagupan Team!

THREE years of hard work, commitment and dedication by both the Dagupan City government and the city’s youth who enlisted to be part of the Balon Dagupan Team earned a well-deserved pay-off and reward.

The team’s success in its campaign to win the 2018 Region 1 Athletic Association plum is proof that investing in the youth is never wasted and the elders who dedicate themselves to the youth’s growth and development earn the indescribable satisfaction of seeing their wards succeed.

The Belen Fernandez administration has shown that investing in the young is a guarantee that the future of the community will soon lie in the hands of spirited, competitive young leaders with a grand vision for the people. After all, they have learned that success comes with hard work, persistence and high moral standards.

The PUNCH salutes the women and the men of the Dagupan City Sports Commission and the City Schools Division who patiently partnered with the parents of the young athletes and sportsmen to help make the latter’s dreams come true.

And to Mayor Belen Fernandez, take a bow – take the applause and gratitude of your constituents whom you have made proud by this latest success.

Tactless tack

PRESIDENT Duterte deserves commendation once more for his decisiveness in recently aborting the helicopter deal with Canada.  The decision was occasioned by the Canadian government’s stupid remarks that it would not allow the sale of its military hardware to Manila if the aircraft would be used “to kill other Filipinos.”

The tactless tack was issued a day after Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana signed the contract for our government to buy the choppers from the Canadian Commercial Corporation to the tune of P12 billion ($223 million).   Are we crazy enough to dispose such a huge amount of money, only to hear the sellers tell us on how to use the commodity?  If that is not the height of folly, what is?  How we use purchased properties is our own absolute business.

Thus, with the President’s quick decision to cancel the deal, he proved once more that he could not be dictated upon by anyone, not even by a First World country like Canada.  Bravo!
