Two drowned on New Year’s Day

LINGAYEN—Two persons drowned in separate incidents while another almost drowned too while swimming on New Year’s Day, according to the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO).

Joven Canuela, 16, a Grade 10 student, drowned at about 3:30 p.m. while swimming with his brother in Barangay Baquioen, Sual.

Joven was dragged down by strong underwater current and never surfaced. Rescuers finally retrieved his body but was declared dead on arrival at the Lingayen District Hospital.

The other drowning victim was identified as Romnick Gonzales, 21, of Salay, Mangaldan who was swimming with his family at 3:45 p.m. at the San Fabian beach.

Gonzales was also carried away by strong current to the deeper portion of the sea.

Rescuers from the San Fabian Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office retrieved his body and rushed him to the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City but was declared dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, Hirea Shiem Quisesem, 16, of Barangay Beyeng, San Fabian town almost drowned herself at about 4:45 p.m. on New Year’s day while swimming by the beach in Binmaley town.

According to the victim herself, she was swimming in the shallow part of the beach when strong current pulled her to the deeper portion of the sea that caused her to panic.

She shouted for help and was rescued in time by patrollers of the Lingayen Police and by other swimmers at the beach.

She was rushed to the Ramirez-Bautista Hospital in Binmaley where she was revived fully. (Leonardo Micua)
