WELCOME 2018

IT was generally a peaceful celebration of New Year in the Ilocos region.

This was the assessment of the crime situation and New Year’s celebration by the Police Regional Office 1 having noted a 57 percent decrease in firecracker-related injuries.

P/Chief Superintendent Romulo Sapitula, regional director, in a statement on Jan. 3, said there were no reported deaths and only one single incident of indiscriminate firing and stray bullet injuries during the New Year’s revelry.

From Dec. 16, 2017 to January 1, 2018, 80 incidents of firecracker related injuries were recorded which was 61 incidents lower over the same period last year and one incident of indiscriminate firing compared to 12 last year.

Sapitula attributed the improvement to the vigilance of the police and the support of the community for the strict enforcement of Executive Order No. 28 signed by President Duterte.

Executive Order No. 28 prescribes confiscation of illegal firecrackers, arrests of persons involved in indiscriminate firing, heightened awareness of the public through media and inter-agency coordination among health officials, local government units and law enforcement agencies. (Eva Visperas)
