FOR ANTI-DRUGS CAMPAIGN

FOUR barangays were chosen as most outstanding barangays of Dagupan last year for their meaningful and relentless efforts in the campaign against illegal drugs.

Cited by selection committee headed by Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo, are Caranglaan. Barangay IV, Carael and Tebeng.

All except Barangay IV, are headed by barangay chairwomen.

Teresa Coquia, barangay chair of Caranglaan said all the 88 drug personalities in the village completed the Community-based rehabilitation program (CBRP), and her barangay remains on alert for any drug activity.

Barangay IV chair Raul Sayson said only four drug personalities surrendered and all went away and are no longer residing in the village. Sayson told his constituents he would not tolerate the presence of a drug pusher in the village.

Barangay Tebeng chairman Helen Fermill said all 51 drug personalities in her village that surrendered not only completed CBRP but given alternative livelihood after their rehabilitation. They volunteered to clean and maintain the Tebeng Road.

Barangay Carael was known to have the most number of drug personalities in the city but Barangay Chair Luzviminda Velasquez was unperturbed. She went around using the sound system to call on all drug personalities to come out and surrender, and 100 did!

She had a heart-to-heart talk with them and their families and convinced them to undergo CBRP, so that after completion, they can be offered jobs. As a result, Carael was drug cleared in no time and residents have since become better citizens.

Last Christmas, the drug personalities that completed CBRP were taught how to make attractive Christmas lanterns by the city government and subsequently earned from their products.

Last year was the second year that they made lanterns. In their first attempt, the city government bought most of their lanterns and used these to adorn the side streets in the downtown area and even along the Jose de Venecia Expressway Extension.

All 31 villages in Dagupan City have been declared by the Dagupan Police and the City Anti- Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) as already cleared of illegal drugs. (Leonardo Micua)
