IM Garcia wins 10th Espino chess tilt

INTERNATIONAL Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia displayed mastery of the board when he topped the Open category of the 10th Gov. Amado Espino Cup Open Chess Championship held in Lingayen last Dec. 8 to 12.

Garcia, also the top seed, earned eight points in nine rounds to emerge as champion in the field of 362 participants that included 20 titled players and won the P25,000 cash prize.

IM Paulo Bersamina (Manila), Jerry Areque (Bulacan) FIDE Master Austin Jacob Literatus (Manila) also earned eight points but had to settle for second to fourth places, respectively, for having lower tie-break scores.

AJustine Diego of Dasmariñas, Cavite, meanwhile, won the tournament’s 14 and Under Kiddie category, and pocketed P10,000.

Special prizes were also given to FM Narquingden Reyes of Bugallon, for the top local player award; WFM Marie Antoinette San Diego (Cavite), top lady award; Winnie Boquiren (Malasiqui,), top Senior 60 and Above award; Princess Mae Sombrito (Rosales), top scorer-5 years old and below; and Shiela Gene Paragas (Lingayen,), youngest participant.

Among the winners from Pangasinan in the Kiddie Category, were Chester Neil Reyes (Bugallon), Mark Gerald Reyes (Bugallon), Dennis Gutierrez III (San Fabian) and Ronald Allan Velasco (San Carlos City).

The tournament, with total participants of 531 in the open and kiddie categories combined, was the largest ever conducted by the provincial government and the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL).

The tournament players from Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Albay, Pampanga, Bacolod City, Naga City, Cebu City, Davao and Cagayan de Oro City participated this year. (PCL)
