DPWH needs more construction workers

HERE’S good news for jobseekers in the construction industry.

The construction projects for the’ Build Build Build’ program of the Duterte administration are experiencing a shortage in manpower.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) District Engineer Rodoldo Dion said there is shortage of workers skilled in carpentry, masonry, machine operators, heavy equipment operators and welders for the simultaneous construction of bridge, highways and school buildings.

Dion said if the experienced shortage of labor force continues, it will cause the delay of completion of projects.

Meanwhile, Technical Education Skills and Development Authority’s (TESDA) Felicidad Orduña said the shortage can be traced largely to the poor interest of unskilled workers in training on construction and carpentry as early as 2010 even as she cited a clear mismatch between the need in the labor industry and the skills of graduates.

She said TESDA plans to restore the scholarship program for construction early next year.

According to DPWH, heavy equipment operators and skilled workers earn P500-P1,000 daily. (Nora Dominguez)
