LINGAYEN– The provincial government stepped up its establishment of the Pangasinan Sports Academy with a reception for the first batch of 171 athletes and their coaches that qualified for its training programs.

“The long wait is over, this is it,” Gov. Amado Espino III said during the reception ceremony held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) gym on December 9.

“You are the first batch. You will be the model,“ the governor stressed. “Yung pagiging magaling ay desisyon ninyo. Paglabas ninyo dito sa NRSCC, nasa inyo na ang desisyon kung paano ang inyong diskarte,” he added.

The Pangasinan Sports Development and Management Council (PSMDC) picked the initial PSA athletes based on their track record and performance in various international, national and regional sporting events.

Espino thanked the parents and guardians of the athletes for allowing their wards to undergo training under PSA and assured them of a college education as scholars because of their acquired athletic skills through PSA.

He said coaches form elite colleges in Manila will likely scout for talents vin PSA as scholars.

PSA athletes were chosen for 14 sporting events, as follows: athletes (20), archery (8), arnis (18), basketball (29), boxing (7), taekwondo (12), chess (10), swimming (10), badminton (8), table tennis (5), lawn tennis (10), karatedo (12), volleyball (12) and sepak takraw (10). The PSA has allotted 54 slots for coaching staff.

PSA athletes will be fetched from their respective localities every Friday afternoon for weekend trainings, and will be returned to their homes Sunday afternoon.

Also present at the reception ceremony were PSMDC Executive Officer Modesto Operania, and DepEd sports education program supervisors in Pangasinan.

The establishment of PSA was conceptualized by 5th Rep. Amado Espino Jr., then as governor, preceding Espino III. (PIO)
