Proposed new coal-fired power plant in Sual opposed

LINGAYEN– The Save Sual Movement (SSM) has manifest its opposition to another plan to put up the second coal-fired power plant in Sual town.

Former Sual Vice Mayor Alex Rigonan, a consultant to SSM, said the group is gathering legal documents to show to proper government agencies and the court to back their claim that a new coal-fired power plant will be detrimental to the health of the people of Sual.

Sual is already the location of the 1,200 megawatt Sual Coal-fired Power Plant operated by Team Energy in Barangay Pangascasan, Sual.

Interviewed by newsmen in Lingayen, Rigonan said the new project is being pushed by Sual Mayor Roberto Arcinue who seemed not to mind if the health and welfare of the people will be affected.

He said they will support Mayor Arcinue if he instead pushes for the construction of a solar power project, like the one set to be put up soon by the Filipinas Newton Energy Corporation (FNEC) in San Manuel, Pangasinan.

The solar power project was endorsed by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) when it was presented to it a few weeks ago.

SSM headed by Rosanna Soriano earlier opposed the earlier plan by Phinma to build a 1,000 megawatt coal fired power plant in Barangay Baquioen, Sual.

Phinma, however, temporarily shelved the project for the meantime for still unknown reasons.

Rigonan said Sual is already hosting the biggest power plant in the country and a new one will further risk the lives and health of the people of Sual.

Definitely, another coal-fired plant in Sual will have a big serious impact on the people’s welfare and the environment of the town, he said.

He asked Arcinue to think of the future of the next generation of the people of Sual for a change before welcoming a new coal-fired power plant.

According to him, Arcinue has been telling the people about the added employment that the new coal-fired power plant can create, but Rigonan insists the health of the people as well as the environment are far more important to the town. (Leonardo Micua)
