PERSONAL HEALTH AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

ALARMED by the reports of increasing number of teenage pregnancy, drug use by teens, and suicide cases, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) intensified it’s awareness campaign through its Youth Health Summit targeting students in the province.

The Youth Health Summit was first launched in Lingayen and gathered some 5,000 high school students of Pangasinan National High School (PNHS) and nearby schools at the Sison Auditorium for the awareness campaign.

Dr. Ana de Guzman, Provincial Health Officer said, the awareness advocacy campaign of PHO targets specifically students in productive age primarily to educate them on fertility, how to value reproductive health, how to choose peers, to avoid the peers using prohibited drugs and the importance of mental health.

De Guzman said 1,655 cases of teenage pregnancy of ages 10 to 14 and 1,639 ages 15 to 19 have already been recorded in the province this year.

Elvira Viray, PNHS principal, said the school alone reported 10 cases of teenage pregnancy most of whom are in Grades 11 and 12.

She said the awareness campaign is timely if only to make students aware of consequences of early pregnancy and use of illegal drugs.

Dr. De Guzman said, the same activity will be held in other high schools in the province. (Nora Dominguez)
