SECOND District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil’s pet project, the Pangasinan-Zambales road, has been listed as one among the priority projects to be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) from 2017 to 2022.

The inclusion of the Pangasinan-Zambales Road was bared by Caroline Castro, chief of the Project, Development, Investment Programming and Budgeting Division of NEDA Region 1 during the Luzon Economic Zone Summit for Pangasinan and La Union sponsored by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) on Wednesday at CSI Stadia in Dagupan City.

Bataoil said the 54-kilometer Pangasinan -Zambales road which he initially named as “Daang Kalikasan” will open areas for eco-tourism development and could be the location of another economic zone for Pangasinan where eco-tourism industries can be put up.

Budgeted at P1.2 billion, the proposed Daang Kalikasan was a former logging road where trucks of illegal loggers in the past used to pass whose potential for eco-tourism he said can be maximized and bring more tourists to southwestern Pangasinan, starting from Mangatarem.

Bataoil said about half of Daang Kalikasan is within Pangasinan.

Once the Pangasinan-Zambales road is completed, the travel time from Pangasinan to Zambales will be reduced to just one and a half hour, he said.

He expressed hope that construction of the project would have already started before he ends his third and final term in 2019 as congressman. (Leonardo Micua)
