THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) warned the public against unscrupulous individuals posing as examiners from Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) out to extort money after a BIR employee was arrested in an entrapment operation in Lingayen.

Lawyer Dante Bonoan, NBI chief in Pangasinan said Edgardo R. Taron was arrested for attempting to extort P150,000 from Marilou Santiago Malicdem, owner of PR Gas in Barangay Tonton West in Lingayen.

Malicdem said Taron went to her store bearing a legal authority stating that she was the subject of an investigation being a delinquent tax payer and suggested that she pays P150,000 to be delisted as a delinquent taxpayer.

She said she initially paid P50,000 but realized the transaction was illegal because the suspect did not issue a receipt.

This prompted Malicdem to ask the help of NBI Central Office.

Taron was arrested in the entrapment operation set on November 3, when he arrived to collect the P100,000 balance from Malicdem.

Taron presented an identification card to the NBI officials stating that he is a computer maintenance technologist 1 assigned in the Revenue Data Center – Luzon 1 located in Calasiao, not an examiner.

NBI and BIR are investigating the case further to determine if others connived with Taron who was immediately brought to DOJ for inquest and detained at the NBI Head Office Detention center.

The DOJ recommended that the case of direct bribery and violation of Republic Act 3019 or anti-graft and corrupt practices act be filed against Taron. (Nora Dominguez)
