LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Director Nestor Domenden and Governor Amado I. Espino, III on November 10 led the distribution of Php11.8 million worth fishery livelihood and projects to beneficiaries from nine towns and one city in Pangasinan.

Assisting during the distribution held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center gymnasium were 2^nd district Representative Leopoldo N. Bataoil, BFAR OIC Assistant Director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan, Labrador Mayor Dominador Arenas, and OIC Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya.

Post harvest materials and equipment distributed to the beneficiaries include: mechanical fish sorter (1 unit), stainless tables (10 units), fish processing kits (fish deboning kits, basin and chopping board) (25pcs), cooler boxes (75 units), stainless smokehouse (2), and fish carts (5); production related livelihood projects (ring net (1 set) and payao materials (6 units)); and artificial reef (70 units).

Beneficiaries are from Sual, Labrador, Binmaley, Lingayen, Labrador, Calasiao, Sta. Barbara, Mangaldan, San Fabian and Dagupan City.

Expressing gratitude for the support of the national government through BFAR on the fishery programs and projects in Pangasinan, Governor Espino said the provincial government revs up its efforts to raise environmental awareness to elevate fishery conservation in Pangasinan.

“We’ve been doing this. We take care of our environment, and give provisions to our marginalized fisherfolks to help them on their livelihood ventures,” said Governor Espino.

Governor Espino disclosed that aside from the request for fishery projects he personally lobbied from President Rodrigo Duterte during the latter’s visit to the province last year for the provision of a dredging machine, and a fish processing center to be built in Pangasinan.

BFAR dir. Domenden assured support to the provincial government, as he vowed to help level up the fishing industry in Pangasinan to sustain the branding of Pangasinan as ‘top producer of milkfisk in the country’ with Dagupan, and Sual as top producing city and town, respectively.

Meanwhile, distribution of motorized fishing boats classified as 30 footer (20 units), 38 footer (7 units), and 20 footer (2 units) amounting to Php3.27 million was held in Bolinao at 3pm in the afternoon. Beneficiaries are from Bolinao and Alaminos.

Domenden said that the fishing boats turn-over program dubbed ‘Fishing Boat (FB) Pagbabago’ also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness among fisherfolks on fishery conservation. /Mark Gerry Naval Oblanca
