SP asks DPWH to start P75-M boardwalk project

THE Sangguniang Panlungsod of Dagupan City has called on the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to start constructing the boardwalk project in the city since the P75-million budget has been made available.

Councilor Alvin Coquia, chairman on the committee on infrastructure, said DPWH must now start the construction of the boardwalk and must not wait for the construction of the new city hall to begin.

The project was sought to be included in the 2017 national appropriations act by Fourth District Congressman Christopher de Venecia to help boost tourism in Dagupan City.

Highway District Engineer Rofolfo Dion told The PUNCH last week that if the P75 million will not be used next year due to a delay in the construction, it will be surely reverted to the national treasury.

Dion pointed out that the project cannot be implemented until the transfer of the city hall is effected.

Two weeks ago, the city council finally approved the ordinance seeking the transfer of city hall from its present location on A.B. Fernandez Avenue to a donated land on Jose R. de Venecia Expressway in Barangay Pantal.

Also approved was the conversion of the donated land from agricultural, being a fishpond, to non-agricultural and for institutional purposes.

The SP, in its session on Monday, noted that the donated 1.2-hectare land will need to be back-filled first before any construction can be started.

The SP said the boardwalk project must not wait for the new city hall to rise first before it will begin construction since the funding is already there. (Leonardo Micua)
