7TH PANGASINAN AGE GROUP CHESS TOURNEY

LINGAYEN The 7th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship, the first component of Pangasinan Chess Festival (PCF), was held over the weekend, October 7-8, at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center.

Pangasinan Sports and Development and Management Council (PSDMC) Executive Officer Modesto Operania said the age group chess tournament was the ‘initial test’ for local chess players who participated in the provincial government-sponsored chess clinics held in two consecutive weekends last September.

“Participation in All chess clinics and chess tournaments sponsored by the provincial government were free-of-charge,” Operania said, as he lauded the Pangasinan Chess League for conducting the chess events for the provincial government.

The PCF, launched during the administration of former Pangasinan governor and now 5th district Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr., saw the participation of chess players from Pangasinan and nearby provinces, and Metro Manila.

“PCF is becoming the biggest chess fest in Northern Luzon,” Operania said.

Participants in the age group chess tournament battled for dominance age divisions: 8 and under, 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under, 18 and under, and 20 and under.

The 6th Pangasinan Chess Championship will be held in November while the culminating event, the 8th Gov. Espino Open Chess Tournament in December.  (PIO/MGNO)
