OF the 528 centenarians registered by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region 1, 207 are from Pangasinan.

Iryn Cubangbang, regional information officer of DSWD, said the centenarians, most of whom are women, will receive P100,000 cash gifts from the government.

The oldest centenarian in Region 1 is a 114-years-old man.

Cabangbang told the KBP Forum in Dagupan City at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) office in Dagupan City on Thursday, that under Republic Act No. 10868, signed into law on June 20, 2016, centenarians will receive a cash gift of P100,000 from the government through the DSWD, plus a letter of commendation from the President of the Philippines.

The benefit can also be availed of by relatives of centenarians who died after June 20, 2016 or after RA 10868 was signed into law by submitting to DSWD a duly issued death certificate of their kin.

Cubangbang added that the centenarians actually received more because Local Government Units (LGUs) usually provide them cash incentives as well.

She said the centenarians in the region revealed a common experience of being physically active during their younger years and confessed to being vegetarians, recognizing these as one of their secrets of long life.

At the same time, Cubangbang said there are presently 64,033 social pensioners in Pangasinan receiving quarterly old age pension of P1,500 or P6,000 yearly. (Leonardo Micua/ Nora Dominguez).
