Urdaneta, Urbiztondo seize their first game

URDANETA City despite being underdog but with ‘never say die’ stance trailing by a mere point in the first half, 44-45, charged full throttle in the last two quarters to thump top- seeded Bugallon, 97-86, in their first game of the best-of-three championship series of the First Pangasinan LGU-Unity-Games Basketball Division II held on August 18 at Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen.

Spearheaded by its four marquee players Christian delos Santos, Carlos Sanchez, Val Agbulos and JayR Elegores who pumped in a combined 48 points in the last two quarters, the dribblers of Mayor Bobom Perez slowly but surely outscored the boys of hizzoner Jumel Espino in the last half, 53-39, with power-forward Delos Santos spearheading the onslaught mostly done in perimeter area scoring a tournament high 35 points, 15 marks alone in the last period.

Sanchez, Agbulos and Elegores contributed 15, 13, and 11 points, respectively.

In other games of the day, fourth seeded Alaminos City routed second seeded Leo Gubatan less San Carlos City, 106-90, in a knockout game to clinch the league’s second runner-up plum. Basista nipped Aguilar, 72-70, to lead the division II finals.

In Division I finals that featured Urbiztondo vs. Sta. Maria, the former led by Mayor martin Raul S. Sison II defeated the latter in their first scheduled game for finals in the 1st Pangasinan Inter-LGU Unity Games held on August 18 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) gymnasium.

Playing on an equal footing in the first quarter, Urbiztondo cagers managed to end the initial quarter with an 8-point lead, 25-17.

Intensity fired up in the second quarter with no-less than Mayor Sison initiating powerful moves. Sta. Maria, on the other hand, managed to keep the score closest with just a point away from Urbiztondo, 25-24 at 6 minutes 48 seconds time left in the second quarter. But, Urbiztondo fueled up and tried to pull up its lead by seven points 38-31 with 58 seconds left. The second quarter score ended, 40-33, in favor of Urbiztondo.

The third quarter is more exciting as the initial two quarters as the score tied-up at 40-40 at 8:19time spent. But Mayor Sison powered up his team and ended the quarter with an eight-point advantage, 60-52.

Team Urbiztondo stretched its lead by 10 points in the first four minutes of the last quarter. Both teams committed several errors in the middle of the quarter but odds continued to beset the eastern team that led to as high as 14-point advantage 79-65 with less than 3 minutes time left. Fourth quarter score ended with 88-77.

Meanwhile, Team Bugallon led by Mayor Jumel Anthony I. Espino suffered its first loss against Urdaneta City.

Scores for the battle for 3rd place, on the other hand, are as follows: Division II- Basista (72) vs Aguilar (70); Division 1- Alaminos City (106) vs San Carlos City (90).

In women’s volleyball games held on August 17 at the same venue, Burgos defeated Aguilar, 96-85, in division II, while Alaminos City plastered Sta. Barbara, 91-68, in division 1 and both led the best-of-three series finals.

Rosales beat Bayambang, 64-56, to notch third place in division 1 while Sison trounced Urbiztondo, 68-58, in division II for third. (Jesus Garcia, Jr. with report from PIO/ RRB))
