FOUR suspected drug peddlers were arrested in separate police operations as Barangay Calmay in Dagupan City was declared drug-free last week.

The declaration making Barangay Calmay the 29th barangay, was made as the Dagupan Police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)  stepped up their operations against  illegal drugs in a bid to make the last two barangays  – Barangay 2&3 and Pugaro – in the city to become drug-free before the end of the year.

Mayor Belen Fernandez, as chairman of the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC), along with Supt. Franklin Ortiz and Barangay Chairman Evangelista de la Cruz signed the declaration attesting that Calmay is now finally drug-free.

Immediately after the signing, four drug personalities were arrested one after the other in simultaneous buy-bust operations by lawmen in Barangays Mayombo and Pantal later that day.

Arrested at 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Albert Lodge Inn on M.H del Pilar street in Barangay Mayombo by joint elements of the police and PDEA were Lolito Rapido, 48, and Ragediel Velasquez, 29.

Both were caught in a buy-bust operation conducted by the lawmen when they tried to sell one sachet of suspected shabu to an undercover police officer.

Also arrested in another buy-bust operation when he sold one sachet of shabu to a policeman disguised as buyer on Arellano Street in Barangay Pantal was Tony Tuliao, 51 while Virgilio Navarro, 56, was arrested at 4:30 p.m. on a vacant lot beside an internet shop also on Arellano Street while in the act of collecting drug paraphernalia and illegal drugs inside a parked public utility jitney.

The suspects are now facing cases of violation of Section 11 of Republic Act 9165. (Leonardo Micua)
