Let’s produce garlic

THERE is merit in the call of the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) to make Pangasinan a major garlic producer in the country not only help stop smuggling but to further boost income of our farmers.

While it made the call to the national government, it behooves upon the Sangguninang Panlalawigan to pursue the recommendation by adopting a resolution endorsing Sinag’s recommendation and authorizing the governor to see to the implementation of the agreement that the Department of Agriculture and SINAG reached in 2015 for the establishment of the pilot areas for garlic planting in the towns Sison, Umingan, Bayambang and in Urdaneta City.

The added production of garlic in Pangasinan will not only help check the exploitation of the abysmal production of garlic in the country by unscrupulous traders but help provide a stable supply for local consumption at reasonable market prices.

The time to act is now.

Sound SONA

PRESIDENT Duterte received 36 rounds of applause during the first hour of his Sona (State of the Nation Address) on July 24.  That’s reason enough to celebrate?  But look at this:  He got more applause during the second hour of his exceedingly sound SONA: 46 for a rousing total of 82 rounds of applause over a two-hour span.

If that is not a screaming proof of warm acceptance of his leadership in only his first year in office, what is?

He laced his SONA with expletives, all right, but that’s just being him:  A man devoid of strict statesmanship and decorum that he has never denied, anyway, from the beginning—starting from the presidential campaign in the run-up to the May 2016 elections that he had stunningly won by a landslide.

If the well-heeled hates that part of Mr. Duterte to this day, fine. As proven time and again by his high approval ratings consistently shown in surveys, the Filipino masses love him for what he is: Straightforward, brutally frank and never pretending to be with finesse and be refined when speaking in public.

Always, his actions speak louder than his words.  To the majority of our 104 million people tired and fed-up of having, seeing, leaders mostly mouthing mere lies, that’s what matters in the end.
