INTER-LGU UNITY GAMES

LIVING up its billing as the top title contender in the league, Bugallon easily rode to the finals by beating co-title contender Alaminos City, 106-96, in the First Pangasinan LGU-Unity Games Basketball Tournament held at Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen on August 10.

Carrying the twice-to-beat advantage for finishing first in the semis, the Bugallon quintet of Mayor Jumel Espino never allowed their opponent take the front after the half-time deadlock, 51-51, with its three key players combining a total 67 points led by its center-forward Aldrin Malicdem pumping in a game high 31 points, the town’s chief executive Espino contributing 19 marks (12 of which from beyond the arc) and Gringo Gabriel chipping in 17.

Third seeded and underdog Urdaneta City twice defeated second best quarterfinalist San Carlos City, 93-91 and 105-85, on August 10 and 11 at the same venue to clinch the finals’ second slot to face Bugallon in the championship match in the best-of-three series tentatively scheduled last week of August or first week of September in the same venue.

Meanwhile in women’s volleyball semifinals, quarterfinalist topper Alaminos City booted out Bayambang, 74-54, to grab the first finals slot while Sta. Barbara twice edged Rosales, 65-62 and 64-59 to seize the second finals’ berth. (Jesus Garcia, Jr.)
