AVIAN FLU OUTBREAK

A 24/7 ALERT and check points at all entry points to Pangasinan have been established to prevent a possible contamination of the local poultry industry by avian flu.

The provincial veterinarian office has alerted all quarantine checkpoint personnel across Pangasinan to be wary of transport of chickens to Pangasinan coming in from outside sources after Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol confirmed Friday that there is an avian flu outbreak in San Luis, Pampanga.

Dr. Eric Perez, provincial veterinarian, said as soon as he heard about Pinol’s announcement and warning at the Luzon Mango Stakeholders’ Forum, he immediately called and alerted his personnel manning the eight quarantine checkpoints set up in Aloo in Umingan, Carmen in Rosales, Bakit-bakit in Rosales, Bayambang, Mangatarem, Infanta, San Fabian and Sison.

While Perez could not readily provide data on the number of poultry farms operating in Pangasinan, he said millions of chickens are transported out of the province and are brought to dressing plants in Bulacan and Pampanga weekly.

He said on Monday, he will coordinate with other concerned agencies for intensified quarantine checkpoints and monitoring in Pangasinan following the avian flu outbreak in Pampanga.

He said their checkpoints are in place 24/7 to check shipping permits and veterinary certificates of animals that are shipped to Pangasinan. (Tita Roces)
