RELOCATION OF DISTRICT JAIL

FOURTH District Rep. Christopher de Venecia’s has committed to help seek a relocation site for the Dagupan District Jail in Barangay Bonuan Gueset that has since caused serious environmental problems in the community and the Lingayen Gulf.

This was announced by Celso Salazar, community environment and natural resources officer in Central Pangasinan, who requested the congressman’s help.

Salazar told KBP Forum in Dagupan City that he brought to the attention of the congressman the problems posed by the district jail and therefore the urgent need to relocate it.

He said the jail warden had already acted on his request to construct a bigger septic tank amid persistent reports in media that the waste water of the district jail is flowing out daily to the Lingayen Gulf.

The new septic tank was already built and is now operational but the perpetual congestion at the district jail will continue to threaten the Lingayen Gulf, Salazar said.

The BJMP district jail is only few meters away from the CENRO office in Barangay Bonuan Gueset.

Salazar said Congressman de Venecia told him he already directed Rody Ramos, his adviser, to locate a property in the district where the district jail can be relocated.

The district jail, which was built to accommodate 50 inmates only from Dagupan, is now holding, more than 1,000 detainees from Dagupan and adjacent towns in the district

Salazar added that the presence of the district jail at the Tondaligan Park also does not sit well with Mayor Belen Fernandez’s plan to develop the Tondaligan Park as a world-class tourist destination. (Leonardo Micua)
