IN a move to make Dagupan City safer, the city government will soon establish a city pound in Barangay Bonuan Boquig for impounding stray dogs caught roaming city streets.

In a news conference, Mayor Belen Fernandez said the establishment of city pound the move complements the ongoing anti-rabies vaccination drive for dogs and cats being implemented by the city veterinary office.

She said the establishment of the city pound should help minimize if not totally eradicate the problem of rabies caused by bites from rabid dogs, some of which are still roaming the streets and the neighborhood.

The campaign against stray dogs is included in Artikulo Uno, reiteration of city ordinances, issued through an executive order last year to instill discipline among city residents

The mayor said task force will now also have to catch stray dogs and cats and be brought to the city pound where they will be vaccinated and be redeemed by their owners after paying the corresponding fines.

Fernandez said she continues to see many stray dogs roaming around despite previous warnings to pet owners to keep their dogs on leash or inside cages. (Leonardo Micua)
