Dagupan residents cautioned vs. dengue

WHILE dengue cases in Dagupan City have decreased, it still has the highest incidence of dengue in Pangasinan because of its big population.

Noting this, Dagupan City Health Officer Ophelia Rivera called on the residents to be conscious about their surroundings particularly potential breeding places of mosquitoes.

Even caps of soft drinks must be turned upside down as these collect rainwater and are, therefore, potential breeding places of mosquitoes, Rivera warned government employees during the program following the flag-raising ceremony at the city plaza.

She said, however, that dengue cases this year from January to July 10 are still much lower compared to the same period last year.

Rivera said dengue is characterized by few days of high fever that tapers down before rising again and cannot be treated simply by ordinary pain reliever and strongly recommends that the patient if brought to a hospital or health clinic for examination.

She said dengue patients need to drink plenty of water to counter dehydration.

Rivera lauded the efforts of Mayor Belen Fernandez in clearing creeks and unclogging drainage canals to deprive mosquitoes of their breeding places.

Meanwhile, the city council recently passed a resolution (proposed by Councilor Dennis Canto) asking the Department of Health to allocate dengue vaccine for Dagupan City in order to help bring down the incidence of dengue in the city. (Leonardo Micua)
