DEPARTMENT heads, selected division chiefs, support staff and other employees of the city underwent a Gender and Development Seminar and Workshop at the Belen’s Hall, West Central I Elementary School on July 18.

The activity was facilitated by the city’s Gender and Development Focal Point System with Dr. Lydwina ‘Wendy’ Balingit-Bernardino of the City Health Office as focal person, in coordination with the University of the Philippines Los Baños Gender Center.

The one-day seminar and workshop focused on basic GAD concepts, gender identity and expression; gender sensitivity communication; sexual harassment in the workplace; gender mainstreaming; basic GAD planning and budgeting; and gender fair language and sharing of best practice.

The panel of resource speakers were Dr. Teri-Marie P. Laude, Dr. Emilia A. Lastica-Ternura, Prof. Amelia L. Bello, lawyer Eric Paul D. Peralta and Sairah Mae Saipudin.

Gender and Development is embodied in the Magna Carta of Women, which seeks to achieve gender equality as a fundamental value.

The Philippines is one of the many State-party signatories of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Beijing Platform for Action and the Millennium Declaration thus the country commits to undertake measures to end all forms of discrimination and violence and promote gender equality.
