Children in feeding program gain weight

THE city’s 120-day feeding program being undertaken by the City Nutrition Office in partnership with several non-government organizations like the Inner Wheel Club of the Philippines already yielded positive results in Barangay Pugaro.
This was revealed by Ana Mariel M. Lopez of the City Nutrition Office after the 86th day of the 120-day feeding program in Barangay Pugaro.
Their data indicates a dramatic decrease in the number of underweight children from 38 or 95 percent at the start of the program to 23 or 57 percent as of June 30.

The number of children with normal weight for age also increased from 0 to 15 or 37.5 percent based on their last weighing.
On July 19, the officers and members of the Inner Wheel Club of the Philippines led by their national president Edna G. Ibrado, 1st national vice president Donna Jiao, 2ndvice president Amelia Jarin, Immediate past national president Cecille Ferrer, national secretary Sofie Lee, national treasurer Pam de Guzman, and national representative Nene Villaflor, most of whom came all the way from Manila, went to Barangay Pugaro for the 86th day feeding under the Batang Belen – Busog Lusog sa Tamang Nutrisyon program of the city.
The Inner Wheel Club of the Philippines along with the Inner Wheel Club of Dagupan, District 375 is the city’s partner under the Angat-Buhay Projects of Vice-President Leni Robredo.
From the total number of children enrolled under the city-s 120-day feeding program in the area, two of them are undergoing medication under the care of the Villaflor Hospital.
Dr. Nene Villaflor encouraged the mothers of the children to maintain proper hygiene and give their children personal attention and care until they gain weight.
The result of the medical examination done on the two children indicates that they need to undergo the process of deworming which was the result of poor hygiene.
“This is why after 86 days they remain underweight because of poor hygiene. This is why I encourage every mother to teach their children observe proper hand washing,” said Villaflor.
To encourage the children’s mother to observe proper hygiene, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez promised them that if they will teach their children proper hygiene and yield positive weight the city will give them reward.
Aside from feeding the children were also given free physical check-ups, deworming, vitamin supplementation, and lecture on proper nutrition in coordination with the City Health Office. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
