Social entrepreneur shot dead in Malasiqui

MALASIQUI—A civic organizer and businessman was gunned down by unidentified motorcycle suspects riding in tandem on May 31 on Magsaysay St., Barangay Poblacion this town.

P/Superintendent Roland Sacyat, town police chief here, identified the victim as Edmund Mendoza, 65, resident of said place.

Mendoza was shot at the back of his head and right arm with cal. 45. He was rushed to Malasiqui Municipal Hospital but died while undergoing treatment.

Sacyat said based on their initial investigation, Mendoza was sweeping the ground in front of their family-owned Producer’s Bank building 6:05 a.m., when the gunman approached him form behind and shot him twice.

He said it was Mendoza’s routine to roll up the gate connecting to their family residence in their commercial building and sweeps the ground every morning.

“The gunman possibly knew this,” he said.

The gunman ran towards his male cohort who was waiting at the northbound shoulder of the road then they fled using a color black motorcycle towards Bayambang.

Sacyat said they are looking at all possible angles for the motive of the crime although the strongest suspicion is that it is business-related.

He added they have interviewed some witnesses in the commercial area where the murder happened for possible identity of the suspects since the suspects did not wear bonnet or ski masks.

He said they would also review closed circuit television footage of some establishments in the area.

Mendoza, a brother of Rev. Fr. Oliver Mendoza and Rev. Fr. Rolie Mendoza, was actively involved in cooperatives and in non-government organizations, as well as president of the association of stall owners in Malasiqui.

The victim was also engaged in poultry business, Sacyat added. (Tita Roces)
