INDEPENDENCE DAY

IN her message to the city during the country’s observance of 119th Independence Day last Tuesday, June 12 at the city plaza, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez underscored the kind of freedom that Dagupan needs at the present time.

On the theme “Pagbabagong Sama-samang Balikatin”, Fernandez said:

Ang kalayaan na ating kailangan sa panahon ngayon ay kalayaan na walang sagabal sa pag-unlad ng ating bayan, kalayaan laban sa droga, kalayaan sa financial crisis, kalayaan sa corruption at poverty, kalayaan sa bullying to protect the children, at kalayaan na tayo ay makilala sa boung bansa,” said Fernandez.

Mayor Fernandez said that consistent with the city’s fight against illegal drugs, she launched the Sagip User Rehabilitation and Empowerment (SURE) program to fight illegal drugs and give drug users a chance to change into new life.

In the fight against financial crisis, corruption and poverty, Mayor Fernandez said she institutionalized certain measures under her “Pag-Asa’t Pagbabago” program by making sure that her administration exercises transparency and good governance and that every tax paid to the city goes to the people by way of services, projects and livelihood programs.

She encouraged teachers of the Department of Education to lead by example in fighting out corruption in the city as she cited the successful campaign of the city in its sports program and the launching of the anti-bullying to protect children, who at their young age have no capacity to defend themselves.

The occasion also marked the oath- taking of the 57-member (MYK) led by young city mayor Jilian Kay Madison S. Fernandez and young city vice mayor Marla Andreyana M. Ober.

To free the city from economic crisis, the city crafted a Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) and Zoning Ordinance covering the period 2015-2025 that won the nod of the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board.

Mayor Fernandez also bared that recently she entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) to make Dagupan City as among the economic zones in the country.

“This will free us from economic crisis and through this program we will be able to provide jobs and income to our constituent,” said Fernandez.

She also pointed out that the city has already outlined a one-year program on health to be implemented next year under the stewardship of the city’s newly appointed City Health Officer Dr. Ophelia Ticsay Rivera, former Municipal Health Officer of the Municipality of Mangaldan.

“We can do all these if only we join hands together,” said Fernandez.

Lucky winners of the search for the Platinum Laki/Bai and the city’s medalists in the last Palarong Pambansa were also recognized during the occasion.

The two lucky winners of the search for Platinum Laki/Bai were Eduardo Ramos Requizo and Daniel Dela Crus Requizo, both of Barangay Calmay. They are cousins and were both born on June 20, 1947. Each received a cash prize of P10,000.
