EIGHT Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Pangasinan were given the go-signal by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) to increase their tuition fees this coming school year.

Dr. Danilo B. Bose, CHEd Region 1 senior education program supervisor, told the KBP Forum in Dagupan on Thursday that the increase, however, is only P28 per unit or 0.9 percent based on the inflation rate prevailing in the region.

Authorized to hike their tuition fees in Pangasinan are: Lyceum Northwestern-Urdaneta, Phinma-University of Pangasinan in Urdaneta; Lyceum Northwestern-Dagupan, STI Dagupan, Phinma University of Pangasinan in Dagupan; Agno Valley College in Malasiqui, PASS College in Alaminos City, and Perpetual Help College in Malasiqui.

Bose said the HEIs conducted consultations with students and their parents and other stakeholders and agreed on the percentage of increase to be charged per unit.

Under the guidelines, HEIs can apply for tuition fee increase every year provided they can comply with all the requirements.

On the complaint that miscellaneous fees being charged by HEIs are equal if not higher than tuition fees, Bose said CHEd cannot stop such increases but can only regulate and supervise it.

The miscellaneous fees are for for laboratory, dental, sports and others. (Leonardo Micua)
