Collaboration for security

THE dialogue (Muslim-Christian Peace Building Forum) initiated by the Moro communities in Pangasinan bodes well for the security and peace and order in Pangasinan.

However, the assurances of close collaboration by the Moros with the police to ferret out sympathizers of the Maute-ISIS group in their midst should not lull the law enforcers to complacency. Police visibility in the communities should even be higher because an understanding has been reached about the need for cooperation and closer collaboration.

Stronger police presence should work both ways in the communities – to ensure quick response to emergencies and to deter any  acts of discrimination against any member of the Moro communities.

The heightened vigilance should be guided by the thought that not all  Muslims are terrorists and Moro communities have another opportunity to prove that to be true. Unfortunately for our brother peace-loving Muslims, they bear the stigma that all the identified terrorists who claimed responsibilities for various atrocities were all  Muslims.

Wakeup call

GAMBLING gives billions of pesos to our government coffers.  Surely, gambling money can be used to better the lives of our people through improved services, medical help, education, more employment opportunities and other socio-political benefits.  But then, there is a tradeoff to this far more negative than positive.  And that is, that gambling also destroys lives, families and the future of our children and generations to come.

The recent casino tragedy should be a wakeup call.  A gambling addict buried in debt, armed with an assault rifle and two liters of gasoline, recently tried to burn down Resorts World in Pasay City, killing 37 employees and guests before torching himself and shooting himself dead.  We are Third World and, thus, poverty lurks everywhere, making it imperative that all Filipinos be barred from entering casinos.

About time only foreigners are allowed entry into the nation’s gambling joints.  They have money to burn.
