CHEd sanctions PSU for OJT program

THE Pangasinan State University (PSU) was sanctioned by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) for implementing an On-the-Job Training (OJT) of its students last year that required them to work as employees of a pharmaceutical company in Laguna.

Dr. Danilo B. Bose, senior educational supervisor of CHEd regional office, told the KBP Forum on Thursday, the commission, however, slapped it with just a warning since it was only its first violation and was warned not to repeat the violation.

He said CHEd investigated the incident and ruled that the sending of students to work as employees in a private firm is a violation of OJT regulations.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) had investigated the case on the complaint of one student who got sick while working with the pharmaceutical company.

PSU president Chester Buted did not appear before the legislative body despite repeated invitations and was subsequently declared persona non grata in Pangasinan.

The House of Representatives reportedly also scheduled the case for committee investigation.

OJT is a course requirement equivalent to three academic units that graduating college students must go through before he or she can graduate for which students pay tuition fees.

Investigation showed that PSU students were referred to a manpower pooling agency who in turn referred them to another company that sent them to a pharmaceutical company in Laguna that treated and paid them as regular employees.

The students were enrolled in business management.

Bose said one of the recommendations given to PSU was to prepare a manual for OJT, a requirement from both private and state colleges and universities. (Leonardo Micua)
