FOURTH District Rep. Christopher de Venecia said he supports move to proceed with the scheduled election for barangay chairmen and Sangguniang Kabataan.

He maintained it is the popular sentiment of the people in the fourth district.

Maraming naglo-lobby na sana hwag naman by appointment ng mga barangay officials,” said De Venecia when he guested in Kabaleyan Channel along with Senator Sonny Angara, chair of the committee on Local Government in the Senate.

De Venecia said he has been going around his district to solicit feedback on vital community issues from the people and he said the issue closest to his constituents is for the barangay election in October to continue.

In that forum,  De Venecias shared Angara’s view that as the local government committee chairman, it is his duty to hear all sides of the issue and encourages everyone to speak out on the issue.

He added that while he also agreed with President Rodrigo Durterte’s view that many barangay officials are vulnerable to drug syndicates’ lobby efforts to influence the results of the election, the democratic process of selecting leaders is still favored by his constituents.

So, it is important for us to hear all sides before we can discern what is the best move for the people and for the local government, De Venecia said.

But he salutes the barangay chairmen, saying many of them are good and hard working and deserve to be returned to their position.

He said the barangay chairmen are the frontliners in public service.

Before the people consult their mayor, congressmen and governor, they always seek the counsel of their barangay captain first.

Meanwhile, De Venecia is calling for the protection and welfare of barangay officials, taking into consideration their personal safety because they serve their constituents  24/7. (Leonardo Micua)
