RAIN DURING HOT SUMMER

SUDDEN and occasional rain at the height of summer season helps wash out the red tide toxin in the coastal water of Anda and Bolinao but will have adverse effect on the bangus industry.

This was pointed out by Dr. Westly Rosario, chief of the Bureau of Fisheries and Agriculture (BFAR) and the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI).

He said rain helps lower the salinity of water and since that results in brackish water, the red tide organism will die.

On the other hand. Rosario warned that rain during the hot summer can result in fish kill.

Meanwhile, shellfish ban in Anda and Bolinao has not been lifted in spite of the results of the  latest test showed the water there was already negative of red tide organism.

Regie Regpala of BFAR’s laboratory center is optimistic that the shellfish ban in Anda and Bolinao will be lifted if the next two consecutive water sampling will be consistently negative of paralytic shellfish poison.

In the latest Bulletin of BFAR last May 10, the order not to harvest, sell, buy and eat shellfish products remains.

BFAR said oyster from the two towns are still not safe for human consumption but fish, squids, shrimp and crabs are safe to eat provided the intestines are removed, washed thoroughly and cooked properly before consuming. (Nora Dominguez)
