Fish producers told to innovate

STAKEHOLDERS in the region’s fishery industry were recently organized to help improve their production and marketing practices.

Fish growers and farmers were taught the values and benefits of product development and learning new marketing trends during the industry forum organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) last week.

Nestor Domenden, Director of BFAR Regional Office 1 said, the forum sought to help fish farmers increase their production and to provide guidance in consumer needs and marketing trends.

He said it’s important for the stakeholders to understand market trends so they can adjust and develop more products by learning new skills and trends in pricing and expand their networks of outlets.

He cited the production and marketing of bangus where Pangasinan is the top producer. He lamented that most of the supply of bangus fry are still sourced from Indonesia.

The government owned hatchery in BFAR and other private hatchery farms in San Quintuin, Sta. Barbara and Lingayen produces fry of shrimps, bangus, pampano, seabass, Malaga and tilapia.

Meanwhile, BFAR noted the drop in the price of bangus in the market, from P120 per kilo to P105 per kilo, due to market forces and the effect of mild fish kill in some areas in Pangasinan.

Some growers have been forced to harvest prematurely to cut their losses owing to the water conditions that prevent bangus from surviving.

But he said there have been no accounts of fish kill among the growers in Sual, Anda and Bolinao, Domenden said. (Nora Dominguez)
