Terrorism knows no boundaries

WE note how some sectors in Luzon are loudly protesting the declaration of the martial law, using the experiences during the Marcos-era martial law as the main  argument. They do this without regard to the plight of the citizenry in Mindanao caught in the constant raging firefight between government forces and terrorist groups, not only the Maute group. Their response is insensitive and apathetic to the welfare not only of the Mindanaoans but everyone in the country.

The preemptive measures taken by the Pangasinan Police in response to the declaration of martial law in Mindanao is the correct calibrated response to the emergency, we now know to be terrorism.

While the emergency being addressed is in Mindanao, it would be foolhardy to believe that Pangasinan (and Luzon) cannot possibly be affected by the armed conflicts in that region. While Mindanao has its own peculiar and complex problems, terrorism knows no boundaries.

With technology in their hands, terrorists can easily and quickly export their activities beyond the borders of Mindanao. The terrorists’ network cannot and should not be underestimated.

For all intents and purposes, whether we like it or not, the declaration of martial law in Mindanao is very much an issue for the province.

Ranting in the streets never help solve problems, but taking concrete preventive and preemptive measures by the citizenry do.

Let us deal with the emergency in Mindanao like it’s ours.

In good hands

BY cutting short his trip to Russia, President Duterte displayed once more his decisiveness—a time-tested sterling character he’s been dishing off since he was Davao City mayor lasting uninterruptedly for more than two decades.

He has put to shame his predecessors’ ugly habit of dilly-dallying when confronted with a crisis needing immediate attention.  The minute he heard about the terrorist attack in Marawi, Mr. Duterte immediately said he was coming home to be by the side of “my beleaguered countrymen.”  Promptly, too, he declared martial law in Mindanao, an act that sent shivers down the spine of evil-minded elements out to terrorize our people and undermine the national leadership.

When you have a President that has no qualms at using an iron fist to quickly defuse threats to our nation’s stability and security, we can sleep soundly at night.  For it means we are in good hands.
