THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Pangasinan surpassed its target with more than 87,000 new registrants for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

Lawyer Marino Salas, provincial election supervisor of Pangasinan, said the 44 towns and four cities in Pangasinan had 42,174 new SK (15 -17 years old who are mostly in Grades 10 and 11) registrants up to the April 29 deadline of registration.

Salas said his office had projected only 35,0000 new registrants.

He attributed the high turnout to their school-based campaign in coordination with school principals who made it mandatory for their students to register.

“We were able to saturate the schools,” he said.

Meanwhile, 45,459 adults registered for regular elections.

In both the SK and barangay election registrants, Salas said the Election Registration Board (ERB) composed of the Comelec provincial chair, civil registrar and the Department of Education supervisor, will be conducting hearings to determine and to validate the qualifications of the registrants.

The result of the ERB hearings will be known after three days, Salas said.

Pangasinan has 1,720,000 registered voters in the 2016 elections. The list will be updated with the new registrants and delisting of those who already died or transferred to other areas, Salas said.

Salas said when President Duterte made a call to postpone the Oct. 23, 2017 elections due to the drug problem with 40 percent of barangay officials suspected to be in illegal drugs, some barangay officials lost enthusiasm in helping the Comelec campaign for their constituents’ registration in their barangays.

The SK and barangay elections were originally set on Oct. 31, 2016 and were reset to Oct. 23 this year.

The last day of registration of voters was on April 29. (Tita Roces)
