BALON Dagupan-trained athletes, the city’s representatives to the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) delegation, clinched four gold medals in swimming, archery and basketball 3×3 in the last Palarong Pambansa held in the province of Antique on April 23-28.

The four gold medals are part of the seven gold medals of R1AA in the Palaro. These gold medals were earned by Janelle Alisa Frances Lin in swimming, Jared Cole Sua in archery and Asher Vidal in basketball-elementary boys 3×3.

Lin of Genesis School of Happy Kids and a member of the Balon Dagupan swimming team ruled both the 400-freestyle and 800-freestyle swimming events in the secondary girls division earning two gold medals. She also won a bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley.

Lin is a three-year veteran of the Palarong Pambansa and admitted that in her first exposure she never won any medal until only last year when she went home with a gold, three silvers and one bronze in the 2016 Palarong Pambansa.

As member of the Balon Dagupan swimming team, Lin has been training daily for two to three hours at the city’s newly renovated poolside under the B.T.F. Does it Program of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.

Lin’s daily training under Mayor Belen’s program brought her to the pedestal of being the first Dagupan athlete who broke three national records and set new national records in the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Championships in Tagum City, Davao Del Norte.

She broke the 2012 national record of Erin Castrillo of Manila in 200M Individual Medley of 2:38.25 by setting a new national record of 2:35.87.

She also broke the 2012 national record of Marie Olegario of San Juan in 200-M Backstroke of 2:39.22 with a new national record of 2:35.19.

Janelle also wiped out the 2015 national record of Aubrey Bermejo of Iligan City in 200-M Freestyle of 2:20.52 by setting a new national record of 2:18.17. Bermejo just broke the 14-year record of that event last year.

Education Program Supervisor Marissa O. Lopez, in charge of sports, disclosed that as per record Lin was the city’s first athlete to win a medal in the Palarong Pambansa.

Sua of Mother Goose Special School System, Incorporated and a member of the Balon Dagupan archery team marked another gold medal for the R1AA in the 50-meter archery secondary boys. He also won a bronze medal in mixed team.

Sua is the city’s first participant in the archery and earned the first gold medal for the city last year in the R1AA meet in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

Vidal of Wonderland School crushed his opponents when he ruled the basketball-elementary boys 3×3. This is the first gold medal earned in that event by an athlete from the region like in the archery and swimming events.

The others who won medals were Sofia Rafaelle De Vera of La Marea Academy, bronze medalist in the 4×50 free style swimming-secondary girls; Jerry Paras Jr. of Tambac Elementary School, bronze medalist in the athletics elementary boys 4×400 meter relay; May Cydel Fajardo of Escuela de Nuestra Señora de La Salette garnered two bronze medals in chess in the individual blitz and team blitz secondary girls.

Kristine Cayabyab of Judge Jose De Venecia Sr. Technical Vocational Secondary School was awarded a Certificate of Recognition in the Mythical Five Basketball secondary girls.

Mayor Fernandez thanked the kids and their parents as well for their dedication in the field of sports especially in their efforts in engaging themselves in the process of their training under the guidance of DepEd and the Dagupan City Sports Commission
