Drug suspect killed in shootout with Mangaldan cops

MANGALDAN—A drug suspect was killed in an armed encounter with operatives of Mangaldan Police and the provincial police during a drug sting before midnight on April 28.

Dead was Dante Mones from Villasis whose other personal circumstances are still unknown. His unidentified companion fled.

A hot pursuit operation ensued after Mones sensed the presence of police operatives during the buy-bust operation prompting him and his cohort to escape.

Mones’ driver lost control of his motorcycle and both fell on the ground.

An exchange of gunfire followed while Mones’ companion fled.

Mones was immediately rushed to the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) in Dagupan City but was declared dead-on-arrival.

Recovered by Scene of the Crime Operatives at the crime scene were one cal .45 pistol, one magazine loaded with five bullets and three cartridges; and five cartridge cases for cal. 9mm.

At the R1MC, hospital personnel collected from Mones’ body two sachets of suspected shabu among other personal belongings.

Meanwhile, a former self-confessed drug pusher who surrendered last year was arrested in a separate operation in Barangay Quinaoayanan, Bani town before dawn of April 28.

Nabbed was Mario Osorio, 40, welder, resident of Bani, included in the town’s drug watch list. Seized from Osorio were two sachets of shabu and P500 buy-bust money.

In a separate anti-illegal drugs operation on April 28, combined police operatives swooped down on the house of Benjamin Andrada alias “Mac-mac”, resident of Barangay Mangan Dampay, Malasiqui town who was not around but the team seized one big sachet containing five small sachets of shabu.

The raid on Andrada’s residence was made based on search warrant issued by Judge Ferdinand Fe, executive judge of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 67 in Bauang, La Union. (Tita Roces)
