THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) lauded the plan of the Dagupan City government to adopt the “waste-to-energy” concept being the right strategy for local government units to resolve their waste disposal and management problems.

DOST Sec. Fortunato de la Peña said he welcomed the new policy enunciated by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment finally allowing waster-to energy conversion, similar to the city’s planned solution as an alternative to its 50-year-old garbage disposal problem.

This is a good development because the country has long wanted to do this but the only stumbling bloc is the clean air act which does not allow the burning of garbage,” he added.

De La Peña assured Mayor Fernandez that his agency can help speed up the realization of the project because there is no waste that will be burned but merely converted into fuel, like diesel and bio-mass that can be used by homes, industries and motor vehicles.

For her part, Mayor Belen Fernandez reiterated the city’s gratitude to DOST for sharing new modern technology, i.e., intensity meter, tsunami warning system, Rapid Earthquake Assessment (REDAS) software, for Public Alert Response and Management Center’s (PARMC) use. (Leonardo Micua)
